SPS ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT MISSION:
Develop Saskatchewan Leaders through competitive team cycling.
Make elite cycling development more accessible for Saskatchewan athletes.
- Establish a Competition Development Youth Team from Saskatchewan.
- Establish a Cycling Canada Trade Team from Saskatchewan that includes Junior/Elite Development talent.
-Compete in races across the continent that match team developmental needs.
- Team SPS addresses this.
On average, Saskatchewan youth athletes begin their cycling careers later in life than athletes in other parts of Canada. Saskatchewan athletes currently have minimal access to high level racing opportunities, with the exception of Canada Games where many can attend with often limited competitive cycling experience.
In order to gain racing experience towards UCI continental cycling teams, those teams that feed the Canadian national team projects, Saskatchewan athletes would be well served by the experience and support of an intermediate cycling team along the professional trade teams pathway. In contrast to the local provincial team which is oriented towards Canada Games participation and results, SPS Athlete Development can feed provincial team projects with experienced athletes and prepare athletes beyond Canada Games towards a future in elite cycling.
In summary SPS Athlete Development wishes to create a pathway to professional cycling from within Saskatchewan. The SPS Athlete Development club team and trade team are designed for athletes 13-23 years of age to train and race within a team environment and compete in critical development races; all while still living in Saskatchewan if they wish.
SPS Athlete Development Cycling Teams creates advancement opportunities where previously they did not exist.
